ABOUT US

Assafou Association for Development

Assafou Association for Development is a well-established and respected non-profit in the Marrakech/Safi region. It was founded in 2011 by a group of volunteers passionate about rural development and highly invested in the preservation and the development of the Al-Haouz /Atlas mountain’s region.

Over the past ten years, Assafou positively changed the lives of hundreds of children and rural women. Its success is due in large part to its deep knowledge of the region, its close collaboration with the local authorities and Associations, and most importantly, a well-established and trusted relationship with the local population. Having experienced, Berber-speaking staff on the ground and among the volunteers is also one of its great assets.

Assafou Association’s work focuses on three important areas: (a) Children Education; (b) Integration of Women; and (c) Rural Development. Today, Assafou has 11 educational centers in the Al-Haouz region.

Beyond support for schooling, Assafou provides warm clothes, school supplies, uniforms, and maintains its centers, so the parents and villagers do not have to.

Our Objectives

To raise awareness about life in the rural areas of Al-Haouz region and develop sustainable solutions to the most critical challenges that directly affect the life of the villagers in the High Atlas Mountains. That involves:

  • Build the capacities and promote the autonomy of the Al Haouz population (communities, parents, teachers, governments, etc.), so that they can take charge of their future in a sustainable manner.
  • Improve the quality of education so it prepares children for success.  We do so by training and supporting the teachers, influencing public policies, providing access to new technologies, and supporting parents, among others.
  • Build several educational centers/pre-schools in the Atlas villages with the objective to better prepare children for a successful start through targeted programs and activities in the Arabic language.
  • Put in place training programs, professional workshops, and literacy classes for rural women.  The Associations also provides women with the material, equipment, and any other support they need to produce, to organize, and to sell their products
